Vivek Hallegere Murthy is an American physician and Deputy Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commission, the 21st General Surgeon in the United States. He was also the 19th General Surgeon from 2014 to 2017. Murthy was the first general surgeon of Indian origin and during his first term as a general surgeon, He is the youngest flag officer on federal service during his term. Murthy is co-chair of President-elect Joe Biden's COVID-19 advisory committee from November 2020 to January 2021, along with former Food and Drug Administration commissioner David A. Marcella Nunez-Smith, professor of public health at Kessler and Yale. On December 3, Politico announced that Murthy would return to the role of General Surgeon in the Biden administration. On December 7, Biden announced that Murthy would return as General Surgeon. The US Senate confirmed Murthy in this position on March 23, 2021, by a 57-43 vote
